Contact: Sandy Ward, Marketing Director Rolls-Royce Exhibit Arrives at the Future of Flight Based on the company’s latest engine, the Trent 1000, the exhibit utilizes an animated 3D experience, using both a new display technology and additional touch screens to allow visitors to interactively explore the engine. It is the first exhibit of its kind that enables the user to control the 3D animations that are shown. Visitors to the Future of Flight can manipulate a virtual 3D Trent 1000 to focus on different parts and learn how they work. It focuses on the key new technologies that are being introduced in the latest generation of jet engines. The display creates the effect that the engine is floating in mid-air without the need for special glasses to be worn by the viewer. “We wanted to create an attraction that visitors can engage and interact with to encourage them to learn more about jet engine technology,” says Phil Hopton, Vice President – Seattle Operations for Rolls-Royce. “At Rolls-Royce we have a strong corporate education policy to promote science, engineering and technology and working with the Future of Flight gives us the opportunity to reach a wider audience.” Rolls-Royce has also donated a scale model of the Trent 1000 so visitors can get a true idea of what the actual engine looks like. “We are proud to have Rolls-Royce join us as a partner at the Future of Flight and I don’t know which is more fun, activating the elegantly detailed counter-rotating shafts of the quarter-scale model or touching the screen to activate 3D cutaways of the operating Trent 1000,” said Barry Future of Flight’s Executive Director. The Trent 1000 is one of the engines available to power the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner and is the launch engine on all versions of the 787. It will power the aircraft’s first flight in summer 2008 and will enter into service with the aircraft’s first customer, Japan’s ANA (All Nippon Airways), in 2008. It is the cleanest and quietest engine, in terms of emissions and noise that Rolls-Royce has ever made and significantly beats all current legislation on both aspects. At take-off, the two Trent 1000s powering a 787 will deliver thrust of around 150,000 lb, which is equivalent to the power of about 1,500 family cars. Yet with the engines at full power, the aircraft is only as loud as the arrival of a subway train. The Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour is open from 8:30am – 5:30pm daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Future of Flight Aviation Center is a unique learning and interpretive facility designed to let visitors experience the marvel of commercial jet aviation and production. It celebrates the historic accomplishments of the last 50 years since the first flight of the Boeing 707 and highlights the technological possibilities for powered, winged flight during the next 50 years. The 73,000-square-foot Future of Flight facility includes a 28,000-square-foot Aviation Gallery with interactive exhibits and displays, 9,000-square-foot, rooftop observation deck overlooking Paine Field, Boeing Tour Center, conference space for 250 people, special event space for groups of up to 750 people, a 240-seat theater, 125-seat café, Future of Flight Store and Boeing Store. The Future of Flight Aviation Center also features Aviation Zones with hands-on exhibits, videos, graphics and interactive stations where visitors can design their own airplanes.
