747 Tail Readied for Future of Flight Exhibit

Everett, WA — The tail from a 747 airplane has a new home – the Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour, which opens December 17, 2005 in Everett, Wash. The tail is from a “classic” 747-100 airplane that was in storage in Marana, Arizona.

The vertical fin was taken from the 48th 747 that Boeing built. It rolled out of the Everett factory on March 5, 1970 and was delivered to British Air in June of that year. After 29 years of service, British Air sold the plane and it saw a few more years of service in Europe, North America, and the Middle East, finally ending as an embargoed aircraft. The “Export Restricted Airplanes” form indicates “Cuba.”

The four-story-tall 747 tail was shipped on a specially equipped rail car from Arizona and arrived in Everett on Sunday, November 13, 2005. It was repaired, assembled, painted and delivered to the Future of Flight on November 21, 2005. The 747-100 tail is to be one of the centerpiece’s of the center’s main gallery.

The Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour features hands-on exhibits, videos, graphics and interactive stations to involve and appeal to the whole family. The current Boeing Tour moves into the Future of Flight, expanding both its facilities and hours. Effective December 17, 2005, visitors can experience The Boeing Tour seven-days-a-week in combination with the Future of Flight experience.
